On June 9, 1804, the first private rehearsal of Beethoven’s Symphony no. 3, Eroica, was held in the Lobkowitz Palace in Vienna in the presence of the composer’s host and life-long patron, Franz Joseph Maximilian, 7th Prince Lobkowicz (1772–1816) and his guests, before it was world-premiered to the public in 1805. This award-winning, BBC period dramatization, starring Ian Hart as Beethoven, captures this remarkable day — the day that Eroica’s first listeners heard a revolutionary sensation that changed symphonic music forever.
